Why CO2total is lower than CO2e

What is recommended (by GHG framework) is to report the CO2e (CO2 equivalents) value. It takes all greenhouse gases into account.

When calculating CO2total on the other hand CO2bio should be excluded. It is indeed CO2, but comes from forest residuals, food waste etc and should NOT be included in CO2e as it is not derived from fossil fuels. It is already included in the existing CO2 cycle.

So the correct formula for CO2e is:

CO2e = CO2total + Other_factions_greenhouse_effect - CO2_bio

That is the reason why in many cases CO2e < CO2_tot.

For example, in the standard EU diesel (EU B7) there is a 7% bio diesel content.

CO2biogen

Carbon dioxide (koldioxid) of non-fossil origin.

CO2total

Total CO2 (CO2fossil + CO2biogen)

Total greenhouse gases measured as carbon dioxide equivalents, includes fossil carbon dioxide, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).

SO2

Sulfur dioxide (svaveldioxid)

NOx

Nitrogen oxides (kväveoxider)

N2O

Nitrous oxide (dinitrogenoxid; lustgas)

CH4

Methane (metan)

HC

Hydrocarbons (kolväten) (includes CH4)

Relations, Legs, Emission Profiles and Allocations

Proxio Emissions is a transport emission calculation system. It calculates emissions on consignment level by matching a specific shipment to an emission profile. The emission profile defines the actual route and how each leg in the route should be calculated.

Concepts and definitions

  • A relation is the unique [A->B] in your transport network

  • Often how the shipment is booked and taxed

  • The route is how the transport is executed

  • The route can be the same as the relation but is often a chain of legs

  • A leg can be of different modalities

How Proxio Emissions deals with it

  • Proxio Emissions uses Allocations to identify a relation.

  • An Allocation is a configuration of origin and destination which points to an Emission profile. If you are using Proxio Tariffs for cost calculations the Tariff will point to an Emission profile instead.

  • An Emission profile is a configuration of a route

  • It defines the legs and how to calculate emission load for each leg
